The Badlands Trail Society was built around a shared love of the Valley. We advocate for responsible stewardship of the land and promote outdoor activities to help nurture a love for the remarkable landscape around us.
“No one will protect what they don’t care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.” — Sir David Attenborough
2023: The Badlands Trail Society was officially incorporated. Throughout the year, Board members hosted community clean-up events, birding hikes, and even a live concert in the badlands!
2024: The Badlands Trail Society advocated that McMullen Island Day Use Area should remain open year-round for local residents to enjoy. In collaboration with Alberta Parks and the Town of Drumheller, the Badlands Trail Society agreed to manage maintenance throughout the winter so the area could remain open.
2024: The Badlands Trail Society hosted a similar range of activities throughout the year, along with some new additions:
- A mountain biking course for members to upgrade their cycling skills
- Weekly events all summer for different audiences:
- Sunday Slow Run Club
- Badlands Biking and Brews
- Tumbleweed Thursdays (unstructured outdoor play time for kids and parents)
- Wing Wednesdays (birding events)
2025: The Badlands Trail Society built its first trail in Newscastle Recreation Area! This 400m skating trail looped through the trees along Newcastle Beach and was open from January — March.
2025: The Badlands Trail Society continued hosting events throughout the year, including its weekly meet-up activities, and were excited to collaborate with the Atlas Coal Mine to offer a Fall Equinox Rock Dump Hike on September 21.
